About Joe

Joe is one of Canada’s most recognized voices in financial services, named Angel of the Year by the National Angel Capital Organization.

Joe Canavan is one of the country's highly regarded and influential venture capitalists and Principal of Canavan Capital. An architect of Canada's fintech ecosystem, Joe has backed and advised category-defining companies including Wealthsimple, KOHO, Capintel, Homewise, Layer 6, and Thalmic Labs, all at the earliest stages of growth.

As former Chairman and CEO of Assante Wealth Management, Joe has spent his career challenging traditional financial models and bridging the gap between legacy institutions and emerging technology. He scaled Fidelity Investments Canada's assets from $60 million to $6 billion, earned Synergy Asset Management (Best New Initiative), and has driven transformative shifts across wealth, venture, and financial infrastructure. As CEO and Founding Board Member of NEXT Canada, Joe helped develop next-generation founders and advance Canada's innovation pipeline.

Joe's track record as a builder goes back three decades. Long before Canavan Capital, in 1994 Joe founded and scaled GT Global Canada one of the most innovative investment companies launching thematic investments in Canada like Global Technology, Global Healthcare and Global Telecommunications. They launched Canada's first momentum fund that year setting them apart from other asset management companies. GT was the fastest growing company in the asset management industry in that era. GT Global Canada created significant wealth and prosperity for investors before it was acquired by Invesco Trimark.

Joe was the founder of Synergy Asset Management in 1998 with RBC as his capital partner. He and his team built a phenomenal company based on investment style blending. Value, Growth, Momentum and Small Cap funds individually or blended together to boost risk adjusted returns, locally and globally. In 2002 CI Financial pursued Synergy to merge and have Joe and his incredible leadership team become the new leadership team at Assante Wealth Management. CI was acquiring AWM for almost a billion dollars at the same time and was in need of a restructuring having had 7 CEO's in 5 years and fraught with challenges.

That same instinct for rebuilding what others had written off shows up well beyond the boardroom. When Joe was named Chair of YPO Gold Toronto, the chapter was facing real challenges. A survey had flagged a low NPS score, and members were leaving. He approached it the way he approaches any turnaround: he dug in. Over the following three years, he drove a 200% increase in the Net Promoter Score and built demand so strong that 60 to 80% of meetings and events had waitlists.

He credits this result to his dedicated board, a wealth of creativity, and a clear long-term vision anchored in a multi-year strategy, one that brought in leaders in AI and quantum computing, military generals, global political figures, and some of Canada's top CEOs, alongside unforgettable surprises such as Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace performing duets with his wife Chantal Kreviazuk, Sarah McLachlan playing a vineyard set, 54-40 at a private jet terminal, and Styx frontman Lawrence Gowan making a surprise appearance at the YPO Holiday party.

For Joe, this role went beyond leadership. It was personal. His servant-leadership style and enthusiasm reflect the community that shaped him early in his career on Bay Street, where the guidance and camaraderie of the YPO leaders who came before him left a lasting mark.
