Canavan Capital
Backing Bold Founders. Building Canadian Companies.
Category-Defining Companies, from Day One
Canavan Capital is the private investment firm of Joe Canavan, one of Canada's most active and influential angel investors. The firm backs early-stage technology ventures — with a focus on fintech, AI, and consumer platforms — at the moments when conviction matters most.
Joe's approach goes well beyond capital. He works hands-on with founders from the earliest stages: shaping strategy, opening doors, and offering the hard-won perspective of someone who has built, scaled, and exited companies of his own. As companies mature, he steps back, letting founders lead while remaining available anytime, anywhere.
That conviction shows up in the portfolio. Joe has backed and advised some of Canada's most category-defining technology companies, often before the market caught on, including Wealthsimple, KOHO, CapIntel, Homewise, Layer 6, and Thalmic Labs. As former Chairman and CEO of Assante Wealth Management and an architect of Canada's fintech ecosystem, he brings founders something rare: an investor who has sat in their seat, at scale.
For Joe, investing has always been mission-driven as much as financial. Every investment is a bet on an entrepreneur, a vote for Canadian innovation, and a contribution to the long-term strength of the country's startup ecosystem.
Giving Back to YPO
When Joe joined the board of YPO Gold Toronto, he found a dedicated community facing real headwinds after years of the pandemic — a low net promoter score and a concerning number of member departures. Rather than shy away, Joe approached the organization the way he would one of his turnaround companies. The results speak for themselves: a 200% increase in net promoter score over three years, with waitlists of 60–80% for most meetings and events.
Joe credits this success to his passionate and dedicated board, along with a burst of creativity and a long-term vision for developing a multi-year program. They hosted incredible leaders from AI and Quantum Computing, military generals, global political figures, and top Canadian CEOs. The events were made even more special with surprise performances from musical artists like Raine Maida and Chantal Kreviazuk, Sarah McLachlan in a picturesque vineyard, and 5440 at a private jet terminal. To top it all off, Larry Gowan, the lead singer of Styx, made a surprise appearance at the YPO Holiday party!
For Joe, this leadership role was one of the most personally meaningful experiences he's had. His servant leadership style and deep passion truly shone through in this member lead organization, rooted in the strong support and sense of community he received in YPO as a young man on Bay St. He’s always been most grateful for the guidance from past YPO leaders and the friendships he built through YPO over the years.
